Raffi Freedman-Gurspan is the first openly transgender person to work as a White House staffer.   She was also the first openly transgender legislative staffer to work in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. She currently serves as director of external relations at the National Center for Transgender Equalit, based in Washington, DC. She is a longtime advocate and public policy specialist on matters concerning human rights, gender, and LGBT people.

At the time of this photo essay, Raffi was 25-years old and working as a Legislative Aid to MA State Representative, Carl Sciortino.  She was living in Boston and allowed me to follow her with my camera for a few days, inviting me into her home, office and her parents home.  Raffi was born in Honduras but raised since birth by her parents Maryanne and Stan.
